Planit was engaged by Golden Plains Shire Council to prepare the detailed concept master planning for the Bannockburn Civic Heart project. The Civic Heart project is to be developed in two stages. Stage 1 required design of a new multi-faceted play space. Stage 2 will deliver an open-air community venue for events and festivals.

The Civic Heart project is located on the main street in Bannockburn and adjoins the council library and community rooms. The Bannockburn markets are also held in this space and needed to be accommodated into the future design.

Planit is responsible for end-to-end delivery of this project, from concept design to construction management.

The main feature of the Civic Heart project in Stage 1 is a large adventure playground including wet and dry play areas. Planit’s team of urban designers and landscape architects developed a strong design to drive the character of the playground. On completion it will offer multi-use spaces catering for a range of ages and abilities, functional through all seasons. The design process included both community and council consultation.

The design covers an area of approximately 1,500m2 of water play and highly embellished adventure play spaces. The adventure playground features varied play spaces providing an adventure-scape for exploration and enjoyment. The project combines featured play equipment with natural adventure elements including rock hop adventure trails, dry and wet creek areas, gardens and open turf spaces, set within a network of pathways and informal trails.

Embellishments include shelters, picnic areas, seating and barbecues located strategically throughout the space to promote passive surveillance and varied experiences throughout the playground. The project received federal government funding for inclusion of fitness equipment.
